Worked practice examples

Simplify 2/6 × 4/8.

Multiply numerators and denominators: 8/48. Divide both by 8 to get 1/6. The numerator of the simplified product is 1.

Calculate 1/3 + 1/4.

Use a common denominator of 12: 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. Add equal-sized parts, not the denominators.

How to use this practice

A useful habit is to estimate before calculating. Multiplying two positive fractions less than one should produce an answer smaller than either starting fraction. For addition, explain why parts need a common size. When asked for a fraction in simplest form, reduce the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.

Will students always see the same fractions? The game varies numbers within question templates and keeps recent-question history to reduce repetition. Some small conceptual sets naturally have fewer variations.
