Math Word Problem Practice for Kids

Word problems ask students to translate a situation into mathematics. Rather than hunting for a keyword, a learner needs to identify what is known, what is missing and how the quantities relate. MathCraft includes story-based questions at selected elementary and later math levels.

Worked practice examples

A hero has 18 coins, earns 3 coins in each of 5 rooms, then spends 12. How many remain?

First find the earnings: 3 × 5 = 15. Add to the starting amount: 18 + 15 = 33. Subtract the purchase: 33 − 12 = 21 coins.

A recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 8 servings. How much for 12 servings?

12 ÷ 8 = 1.5, so scale the flour by 1.5. 2 × 1.5 = 3 cups. This assumes the recipe scales proportionally.

How to use this practice

Ask learners to restate the question in their own words and estimate an answer before solving. Drawing a bar model or making a table can help. For a wrong answer, separate reading confusion from a calculation error before choosing more practice.
