Worked practice examples
A rectangle is 8 cm long and 3 cm wide. Find its area and perimeter.
Area = 8 × 3 = 24 cm². Perimeter = 2(8 + 3) = 22 cm. Area measures the surface; perimeter measures the boundary.
A right triangle has legs of length 6 and 8. Find the hypotenuse.
c² = 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100, so c = 10. The hypotenuse is opposite the right angle.
How to use this practice
Ask learners to label the quantity they are finding before choosing a formula. Distinguish lengths, square units, and cubic units. Diagrams can reveal a relationship, but an illustration should not be measured by eye unless a question says it is to scale. Use the explanations to connect formulas to what a diagram represents.
