Use a rule “multiply by a number, then add a number”: 3 → 8 and 5 → 12. What does 7 map to?

The input increases by 2 and the output by 4, so the multiplier is 2. Since 3 × 2 = 6, add 2. Check 5 × 2 + 2 = 12. Then 7 × 2 + 2 = 16.

Use one multiplication rule: 2 → 6 and 4 → 12. What does 5 map to?

Both examples multiply by 3. Therefore 5 × 3 = 15. Check both pairs instead of guessing from the first alone.

How to use this practice

Ask the learner to explain a proposed rule and test every given pair. One pair alone can fit many different rules. These original examples are discussion activities, not reproduced test items, official age-level calibration or a score predictor.
