Worked practice examples
Solve 5x + 8 = 43.
Subtract 8 from both sides: 5x = 35. Divide both sides by 5: x = 7. Check: 5(7) + 8 = 43.
Solve 4x − 6 = 18.
Add 6 to both sides: 4x = 24. Divide both sides by 4: x = 6. Check: 4(6) − 6 = 18.
Why not subtract 8 on only one side?
That changes the equality. The equation is like a balance: applying the same operation to each side preserves the relationship.
How to use this practice
Say each operation aloud and write the new equation on a separate line. Subtracting the constant first is often the clearest method, although other valid methods exist. MathCraft lets parents select one- and two-step equation practice separately from more advanced algebra.
