Equivalent fractions name the same amount using different-sized equal parts. Understand what stays the same before learning the multiplication shortcut.

Worked practice examples
Why does 3/4 equal 6/8?
Shade 3 of 4 equal parts of a strip. Split every part into two equal pieces. There are now 8 pieces, and 6 are shaded. The amount shaded has not changed: 3/4 = 6/8.
Complete 2/3 = ?/12.
3 × 4 = 12, so multiply the numerator by 4 too. 2 × 4 = 8. Therefore 2/3 = 8/12.
Does adding 2 to both numbers preserve 1/2?
No: it produces 3/4, which is larger. Multiplying both numbers by 2 gives 2/4 instead, the same amount as 1/2.
How to use this practice
Draw two identical rectangles and partition them differently. Label the total number of equal pieces and the shaded pieces. Then connect your drawing to the multiplication. In the learning editor, select equivalent-fraction skills without assigning every fraction operation.
A common parent question
Why must both numbers change? The denominator counts all pieces and the numerator counts selected pieces; splitting every piece changes both counts.
